Double Letter Region Tags
Some double letter tags were re-allocated in 1974 and again in 1981 as more heavily populated regions ran out of number sequences for their original tags. In some cases a tag would continue to be used in the same place but be expanded to encompass a larger region. In other cases the opposite would happen, where by, a tag that covered a large but sparsely populated region would be contracted to cover the most densely populated ‘city’ within that region.
In other cases a tag would be completely removed from a smaller region and given to a much larger one whilst the smaller, ‘donor’, region would be encompassed by a neighbouring region.
Most tags were originally issued to their regions in 1903, under the ‘Motor Car Act 1903’.

‘Q’ was brought into use in 1983 for vehicles of indeterminate age, such as kit cars, rebuilt write offs, or in cases of imported vehicles with insufficient documentation. The ‘Q’ registration was also used in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to car crime. Many recovered, stolen, vehicles had been given false identities and in cases, where it was not possible to determine a vehicles true identity, a ‘Q’ registration would be issued.
